La Esperanza: Mexico’s largest ARR project

Once a vibrant tropical forest and diverse region, the landscape of central eastern Mexico has been heavily deforested, with less than 8% of the Veracruz Moist Forests remaining protected today. Decades of cattle ranching, citrus farming, and urban expansion have stripped the land of its native vegetation, disrupted ecosystems, and threatened local livelihoods.

La Esperanza offers a unique opportunity for landowners to generate reliable income through our Native Species Restoration and Rotational Grazing model. In doing so, the project restores critical habitats and enhances biodiversity across one of Mexico’s most ecologically important regions.

We need more projects like this - ones that truly see the rural farmer

A new economic reality for local communities

  • Generating over 200 jobs through large-scale restoration activities, including planting, land management, and ecological monitoring, with long-term roles sustained throughout the project’s life cycle

  • Providing landowners with reliable income through lease payments and share of carbon revenue via a dedicated community fund

  • Building local capacity through training in regenerative agriculture and climate-resilient land use, strengthening long-term productivity and transforming local economies

  • Reducing economic vulnerability to volatile commodity markets and climate impacts

  • Advancing gender equality by employing women in nursery and reforestation brigades, offering supportive infrastructure, and transforming the nursery into a safe, inclusive space for learning and empowerment
